About this repertoire

A repertoire based on the classical Queen’s Gambit Declined, the most solid, popular, and efficient defense against 1.d4. Starting with 1…d5 and 2…e6, Black is constructing an impressive central position which gives White very little active play early on, but, in exchange, blocks in the c8-bishop. So the strategy in the QGD is very rich and complex, and playing it will teach you how to navigate many different structures and how to solve very hard positional problems. The focus of the repertoire is on the main lines, but you can find an answer to almost anything White may throw at you when you start with 1…d5.

What it looks like at your rating

Chessbook trims every repertoire to the moves opponents actually play at your level, so the same repertoire is a different size for a 1000 and a 2000. These numbers use the default coverage target of one game in 150; effectiveness and soundness are Chessbook's own scores, explained in the help pages.

Questions about pre-made repertoires

Is Hanging Pawns' QGD free?

Yes. Every pre-made repertoire on Chessbook is free to add. The free Starter plan holds up to 200 moves across your repertoires; Chessbook Pro removes the limit.

What happens when I add it?

The lines are copied into your own repertoire, trimmed to the positions that actually occur at your rating. From there you can edit any move, add lines from other sources, and drill everything with spaced repetition.

Can I combine it with my own Black openings?

Yes. A Chessbook repertoire is one tree per colour, so a pre-made repertoire sits alongside anything you add yourself and the coverage report treats them as one.

Train it with spaced repetition

Add the repertoire, set your rating, and Chessbook schedules every move until you never forget it.
